Ballet

Our ballet program is designed to teach students the correct terminology, technique, and precise movements specific to classical and neoclassical ballet. Students will learn the Cecchetti Method of classical ballet, where they will focus on turn-out of the legs, high extension, and quality of movement. They will also be taught the Balanchine style of neoclassical ballet, which will allow students to explore a more fluid style of ballet.  In class students will perform exercises composed of movements from the traditional vocabulary of classical ballet. It is here that that their technique is maintained, strengthened, and constantly refined.

Our ballet classes are performance classes, meaning that they will perform in the spring recital. Ballet classes are split by levels, not based on age of the student. Please contact the studio to set up a ballet assessment for proper placement in the ballet program.

Pointe

Pointe students must be at least 12 year of age and have a concrete understanding of their bodies in relation to classical ballet.  Pointe focuses on performing the movements and exercises of classical and neoclassical ballet, while on pointe. Students of pointe will progress and develop foot strength as they graduate each level. The ultimate goal of pointe is to make it seem effortless. Therefore students will concentrate on the quality of their movements.  Pointe is a performance class and does perform in the spring recital.  Students interested should contact the studio to set up an evaluation.

Dance Expressions (ages 3-5)

It's all about having fun and loving movement. In this class we will encourage children to express themselves and experiment with different styles of dance through the use of fun music, lots of props, and tons of encouragement. We will concentrate on building a foundation for the love of dance as well as basic dance technique and terminology.  Children in this class WILL learn a routine to perform in our end of the year production.

Level 1 - 1st year in Dance Expressions

Level 2 - 2nd year in Dance Expressions

Movement (ages 2-3)

Offered in short 10 week sessions, this is the perfect class to get your preschooler started in dance.  Each week is an exploration in music, rhythm, beats, and self expression.  Children are encouraged to move their bodies and use their gross motor skills.  Children will also learn about taking turns, following directions, and working with others.  Students in this class will NOT learn a routine for our end of the year production.

Pom

This type of dance focuses on sharp motions using pom pons for visual effect. Team work, synchronization, and creativity are stressed. Think of watching a living kaleidoscope! Style can vary greatly from one dance to the next. This is definitely a youth favorite.

Jazz

This style focuses on jazz moves that incorporate musical interpretation, synchronization, technical steps, visual effectiveness, variety of movements, skills and control. Portraying the emotion of a piece is a main goal of the dancers. This style allows dancers to really express their personality.  There are many styles of Jazz.  Most of our Youth Classes focus on Classical or Broadway style Jazz and are upbeat in nature.  These styles (along with Lyrical Jazz) use a ballet base in technique that is taught along with the jazz class.  Ballet is a recommended class for all dancers ages 7 and up.  For descriptions of Lyrical and Contemporary Jazz- please see below.

Hip Hop

Break all the rules of dance with these classes. This contemporary, upbeat style of dance focuses on isolations and popping of the body with attitude. "Tricks" are often incorporated into routines. Style ranges from street to pop with countless variations between. This highly athletic dance focuses on visual effectiveness and crowd appeal.

Lyrical

A ballet based style of dance that concentrates on the emotions and feelings of a song.  Dancers dive into the meaning of the music and tell a story with their bodies.  Choreography is often slower and controlled while utilizing the muscles, movement, and technique from ballet.  It is for this reason that we recommend dancers have at least 2 years of ballet before joining lyrical.

Contemporary

The name "contemporary dance" is used to describe a wide range of dance techniques that tend to break away from the rigid rules and techniques of ballet.  (This is NOT to say that there isn't ballet technique used in the class).  Movement is free, organic, and could even sometimes feel awkward to the seasoned trained dancer.  Contemporary can be danced to almost any style of music, or united with other dance forms to create new styles of movement.  Contemporary seeks to work with the natural alignment of the body, and is therefore safe and accessible for beginner dancers.  At the same time, it offers unique movement and technique that allows experienced dancers to push their dancing to new boundries.

Skills and Conditioning

This class is a combination of our popular summer classes "Strength & Flexibility" and "Leaps, Turns, and Jumps"  We will spend the first 15-20 minutes doing conditioning exercises designed to target the muscles used most often in dance- core, arms, and legs.  We will then move onto our skills class learning the "tricks" of dance.  We always begin with the basics and then advance to the level of each individual dancer.  Emphasis is placed on proper technique and safety with maximum feedback given to each participant.

Recreational Dance
A combination dance class covering the styles of hip hop, jazz, pom, and/or lyrical. The direction of the class can somewhat be tailored towards the students' interest. Choreography will be taught but will not be performed in our end of the year show. The goal is to spend between 3-4 weeks on a particular style/routine and then move on learning a total of 2-3 short routines in the trimester.

Class Level Guide
Please use this guide when signing up for classes. The POD reserves the right to move students taking classes at the incorrect level.

*Level I = For Beginner/Intermediate students.  Basic skills incorporated into routine- skills used in routine will be broken down and taught to the students.  Taught at a pace for every student- instructor will break down moves fully to help the beginner develop technique.   Routine develops at a steady pace.  Good choice for the younger students in an age bracket.  No pre-requisite for this class.

**Level II = For Intermediate/Advanced students.  Students are expected to have a grasp on basic skills and experience in the particular style to enter this class.  Should know technique for a pirouette, russian (toe touch), grand jete (split leap), and kicks-  will begin to develop these skills more fully and build on them to more advanced skills.  Choreography begins to be more intricate and classes will be taught at a slightly faster pace than level one.

***Level III = For Advanced Students.  Students are expected to have experience in the particular style of dance and have the ability to learn at a faster pace without frustration.  Mastery of basic skills as well as knowledge of more advanced skills is expected (switch leaps, turning leaps, double turns, capezios for example).  Choreography is intricate with fast transitions, tempo changes, and stylized movement.

Elite Level = Advanced Students looking for an extra challenge.  These classes push the envelope and are taught at a very fast pace incorporating advanced skills.  Technique classes include advanced skill combinations.  Great class for students with the goal of trying out for a college team in the future.  Instructor approval required!
